Galvanised vs Mild Steel Shutters, Which One Should You Choose?

A practical breakdown of the two most common shutter materials, so you can make the right decision for your property in Nagpur or Vidarbha.

When someone calls us for a rolling shutter quote, one of the first questions we ask is: "What material are you considering?" The answer matters more than most people realise. The difference between galvanised steel and mild steel (MS) shutters affects not just the initial cost, but how long the shutter lasts and how much it costs to maintain.

After 45 years of installing shutters across Nagpur and Vidarbha, here's our honest take on both.

Factor Galvanised Steel Mild Steel (MS)
Initial Cost Higher Lower
Rust resistance Excellent (zinc-coated) Poor (requires regular painting)
Lifespan 20–30+ years 8–15 years
Maintenance needed Very low Regular painting every 2–3 years
Ideal for Shops, showrooms, commercial, coastal Temporary use, budget-constrained projects
Long-term value Better Costlier over time (maintenance + replacement)

What is galvanising and why does it matter?

Galvanisation is the process of coating steel with a layer of zinc. This zinc layer acts as a barrier against moisture and oxygen, the two main causes of rust. When a galvanised surface is scratched or nicked, the zinc actually sacrifices itself first, continuing to protect the underlying steel even when damaged.

Mild steel, by contrast, has no such coating. Once the paint or primer cracks (which it will, especially in Nagpur's hot and monsoon climate), the steel is directly exposed to moisture and starts rusting. A shutter that looks fine from a distance may be quietly corroding from the inside.

The real cost difference over time

This is the part most people miss. Yes, galvanised shutters cost more upfront, roughly 15–25% more than equivalent mild steel shutters. But consider the lifecycle:

  • A mild steel shutter in Nagpur typically needs repainting every 2–3 years. That's a recurring cost, plus downtime for your shop.
  • Rusted mild steel laths need replacing much sooner, in 8–12 years, you might be looking at a significant replacement or major repair job.
  • A quality galvanised shutter, properly maintained, can last 25–30 years with nothing more than occasional lubrication of the guide channels.

When you add up painting costs, repair costs, and eventual replacement over 20 years, galvanised almost always comes out cheaper in total.

When mild steel might make sense

We'll be honest: there are situations where mild steel is a reasonable choice:

  • Temporary installations: if you need a shutter for a space you'll be occupying for only 4–5 years.
  • Very tight budgets: where the upfront difference is a genuine constraint and you can commit to regular maintenance.
  • Interior spaces: for shutters in dry indoor environments with no moisture exposure.

Our recommendation

For any permanent commercial installation in Nagpur, a shop, showroom, godown, or office, we almost always recommend galvanised steel. The climate here, with its hot summers and heavy monsoons, is hard on mild steel.

For industrial shutters (where size and strength are the main requirements), we use heavy-gauge steel profiles that are galvanised or have a durable protective coating appropriate for the environment.
